Australia does not need to choose between AI investment and copyright.
Responsible AI development and strong copyright protection are not competing ambitions. They can, and must, coexist.
Commercial investment comes with input costs. Copyrighted works are not an exception. If creative work is used to build commercial AI systems, obtaining permission and paying rightsholders are part of the cost of doing business.
AMPAL supports responsible AI investment and voluntary licensing. What we do not support is securing that investment by siphoning value from Australian rightsholders to multinational technology companies.
As Australia considers the settings for AI training and infrastructure, there is a fundamental question to answer:
What evidence is there that Australia’s voluntary licensing market has failed, or for that matter, even been tested?
